Built around 800 A.D. by the Tairona people, the Lost City (also known as Teyuna) is one of Colombia’s most important archaeological sites. It remained hidden from the outside world until its rediscovery in 1972.
The Lost City, also known as Teyuna, was a major commercial and cultural hub for the Tairona people.
Located over 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level, it stands out among ancient cities in Latin America for its mountainous setting in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
During the trek, hikers cross several rivers — some so refreshingly cold that they offer a welcome break after long stretches of walking.
